In
2012, a viral video emerged on YouTube made by the Invisible Children
organization. The video, which was 29 minutes long, was an extremely moving and
emotional documentation of the atrocities in Uganda, which can be accredited to
a warlord by the name of Joseph Kony. The goals of this organization were to
raise funds to help the Ugandan army capture Kony, to help protect the
communities that may be in danger of his wrath, and to evoke international
support and attention for the seemingly just cause. By the end of the video,
any person is more than willing to donate to the cause because it’s
credibility. The Invisible Children organization’s spokesperson and video
creator, Jason Russell, had been working in Uganda for many years, and had
extensive knowledge on Joseph Kony’s history and the level of crimes he had
committed. Jason Russell also appeared to be a very well organized, educated,
and kind man. The downfall of the Kony 2012 campaign can be accredited to the
uncovering of how much their funds were being put towards the actual cause, and
the video of it’s spokesperson Jason Russell having a mental breakdown which
went viral soon after being released on YouTube. Many people were turned off to
donating to the organization when they found that much of the money that was
donated was being put towards running the organization than the actual cause.
Also, seeing Jason Russell’s disturbing viral breakdown didn’t help either.
