AP Packet 2: Pathos
Gatorade Made in New York ft. Derek Jeter
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfgS1lvqX8I

The commercial starts out with black and white footage of New York with Frank Sinatra singing I Did It My Way. It then goes to Derek Jeter riding in the back of a town car on the way to one of his final games. Suddenly, Jeter decides to get out of the car and walk the rest of the way to the game. Along his way he runs into all different kinds of people. These people all have two things in common; they're New Yorkers and they're happy to see him. It is also apparent that he is happy to see them as well. Gatorade uses pathos to evoke people's love for Derek Jeter and to show his love and appreciation for New York. Gatorade also uses pathos to try and associate themselves with the love people have for Derek Jeter. In a time where many baseball players were accused of cheating and where most were full of themselves, there was one player that was different from the rest, and that was Derek Jeter. Derek Jeter is known to be an honest person, who cares about his fans, and a great player who appreciates all the opportunities he has had. As a brand Gatorade hopes people will think of them as the same; as the greatest there is, but also as a company who cares about those who help make it great. They hope that when people think of Derek Jeter and all he has done for New York, that they think of Gatorade too.

  1. Your last sentence to me is the most important - that they want consumers to associate Gatorade with Jeter. The question to you is, how effective an ad campaign is this in your estimation? Do you think Gatorade sales will climb as a result?

Ms. Troya & I had chills when we first watched this commercial!
